The first game of the season was a smashing success! Coming up on the home opener, everyone was feeling the energy for an electric matchup against Greater Atlanta Christian School. The Mustangs did not disappoint as they showed out with a 76-7 win. With an impressive 11 touchdowns to only one touchdown from the opposition, it is clear that both the offense and defense came out ready to play.
Coming into week two, the Mustangs’ energy levels stayed high. The Stable held it down against Indy Nation, and everyone was reeling with excitement from the second huge victory. Both sides of the ball performed incredibly. On the offensive side, Alex Broome (#20) and Carlin Walker (#21) had a combined eight touchdowns. The defense also contributed to the scoreboard with a pick 6 from Jaden Lyles (#2). Other notable plays from the defense were interceptions by Jordan Jackson (#8), Elijah Pitts (#24), and Chance Lorick (#5).
After the second game, Chase Allen and Alex Broome were interviewed by Pony Express journalists. Chase thought the team “executed well but still [has] room for improvement.” His play of the game was “Jordan’s interception because it was a significant milestone for his teammate and friend.” Alex thought the team “jumped on them quickly in the first half and [after] coming back from halftime, and the defense played really well.” His play of the game was “Elijah Pitts’s interception because it gave the team more energy.”
The Mustang’s energy was high going into the September 10th home game against Pulaski Academy. After a slow start for Lipscomb, the game took a turn in the Mustangs’ favor after Lipscomb adjusted to Pulaski’s unique playing style. The Mustangs’Lipscomb’s ability to think on their feet was clearly evident in this riveting game. Once the Mustangs had adapted to their opponent, there was no stopping them. Beau Dawson skillfully catching the ball out of the hands of Pulaski’s defensive player proved to be an important completion for the Mustangs. On defense, Chancellor Lorick and Braden Ford both had key sacks which slowed Pulaski’s offense and helped the Mustangs gain momentum early in the game. Plays from Junior Sherrill helped the Mustangs regain the energy they had going into this game and contributed to Lipscomb’s win against a team ranked second2nd in the state of Arkansas. Sherrill got a remarkable four touchdowns in this game alone which were integral to the Mustangs’ win. Running back, Alex Broome, continued to be a key part of the Mustang’s success, scoring three touchdowns and solidifying Lipscomb’s victory. Luther Richesson had a series of completions that contributed to the Mustangs’ success. His pass to Nathan Spillman early in the third quarter demonstrated the talent and skilled communication that exists in the Mustangs’ offense. Lipscomb’s defense had remarkably two players with multiple interceptions which set the Mustangs up for success:; Chancellor Lorick and Jordan Jackson each had two interceptions which set the Mustangs up for success. Overall, Lipscomb’s win over Pulaski academy demonstrated the progress the Mustang’s program has made in recent years and gave the team the confidence and momentum they need going forward this season.
Following the game, the Pony Express interviewed Jordan Jackson, a senior who played a pivotal role in the Mustangs’ win against Pulaski.
PE: What are your thoughts about the game today?
Jackson: I thought we played well. We really adapted on the fly, because tonight the defense played nothing we had practiced all week, but we still made it work. And that’s a big shoutout to our coaching staff and the way we prepare.
PE: Play of the Game?
Jackson: What do I think is the play of the game? I don’t know. There [are] a lot of plays. It’s too hard to pick one.
PE: What are you looking forward to for the rest of the season?
Jackson: Week 6 [against] Oakland, to play CPA again, and then hopefully a state championship run.

Recap of the Season So Far
Mary Jane Estes
The girl’s soccer team has had a great start to the season. They have won against Beech High School, Goodpasture, Columbia Central, MLK, and Pope John Paul II. Furthermore, their captains this year are seniors, Emma Weber and Clarke Williamson, and Junior, Allie Wells. These players lead with confidence and kindness, allowing other players to be able to rely on them in the game. Also, the overall team is led by Ryan Bouch, who leads the boy’s soccer team in coaching as well. The skill each of these players have is immense, and watching the games every Tuesday and Thursday has been exhilarating. Our defense is solid, and our other players are aggressive and go towards the ball. This combination offers something that many of the teams we have faced have a difficult time combatting. Solid leadership by our captains and the coach, as well as great offensive and defensive players has created a very skilled team that works hard on and off to overwhelm their opponents.
